Courthouse Square in Greenfield Indiana - East Side

East Side of the Courthouse Square Showing the Corner Building at Hy40

A nice looking old building, I wish it could be restored. I believe there used to be a old book store on the left many years ago.

The Old Jail on the East Side of the Courthouse Square

This was the fourth jail built in 1871. It has both Italianate and Second Empire influences in it's appearance. Looking northeast. This photo was taken in the morning on November 7, 2009.

The beautiful old home is probably still be used as attorney offices. The street for one block has been closed permanently.

South Side of the Courthouse Square

I like this small Queen Anne styled house, with it's wrap around porch and ginger bread, very attractive. This view looks to the southwest. This photo and the one above were taken on November 8, 2009.

At the west end of the south side of the square is a newer nondescript building. The same goes for the west side.

First block of west Main in Greenfield Indiana

First Block of West Main-Eastern Half of the North Side

The second building from the left in this view was the old bank and the first building to the left of State street was the old Masonic building dating back to 1895.

About half of the buildings in the western half of this block on the  north side burned in about 2002. I was told it was a case of arson.

Old Masonic Building

The old Masonic building at 2 west Main Street was started in 1895. This view is looking across Main street to the northeast. It now houses the ‘Crazy Lake Art Center’ which has a nice co-op art gallery and has artist studios upstairs. Every second Friday evening is ‘Open House’ where you can chat with the artists and watch them work, and usually there is an artist demonstrating. There are classes and even a ‘Plein Air’ group that paint on location.

The brick building to the right  in this photo  is the old L.A. Davis building built in 1885 at 8 West Main and has a modernized lower facade. The building to the left is 10 and 12 West Main and the lower facades are pretty much original it appears. Rock, Paper, Scissors Cafe and Art Center occupies 10 West Main and Cookie Mama has art classes at 12 West Main.

Old Bank Building at 14 West Main

A closeup view of the old bank to the left of the buildings above and shown in my November 14th post. I love this building and wish it wasn’t so cluttered.

The building one the left completes the eastern half of the first block of west main. This photos was taken November 8, 2009. I noticed some work being done on this building in late July of 2010. Hopefully some restoration work.
