Salem is the county seat of Washington county and has a population of around 6500. It was founded in 1814 and got it's name from Salem, North Carolina. John Milton Hay, who became personal secretary to President Abraham Lincoln was from here.

Washington County Courthouse
It was back in 1964 when I
first saw this grand old building that my interest in courthouses began.
I consider it one of the best of Indiana courthouses. It is the third
courthouse in Washington county and was finished in 1888, the first one
was built in 1816 was used for only eight years.
Courthouse Tower Detail
A beautiful stone tower and a pleasure to look at.
I have photos of some of the buildings around the square of which I will post later.
