Rural views in Shelby County

Octagonal Barn
This octagonal barn is located on CR700S about eight miles SE of downtown Shelbyville, the county seat. We still have a few of these left as well as a good number of round barns in Indiana, but they are disappearing quickly and I hope to capture a number of them in color before it is too late. This view is looking north and was taken on the morning of September 14, 2009.
Another View of the Octagonal Barn
Looking Northeast in this view. This barn is decorated with Christmas lights and has a large star of lights about five feet high on the top. They were not removed so I did so in these photos. I would like to do a painting of it in a different setting.
Old Four Span Stone Arch Bridge
This bridge is located about seven miles southeast of Shelbyville. It spans Conn’s Creek on CR450S and is 141 feet long. This view is looking northwest.
Another View of the Stone Bridge
I like the light effect coming through the arches in this view. I normally like to take views from both ends showing the sides but it wasn’t possible in this case. This view is looking southwest and both images were taken on Tuesday morning, December 1, 2009.
Flatrock River at Geneva
A beautiful view looking northeast at the calm Flatrock river, nine
miles south of Shelbyville. About thirty years ago this scene and area
excited me so much. The area was more remote, rugged and wooded and when
taking this view…you did so from this very long and old iron bridge.
Not so now…just a regular concrete bridge and the area…clean cut and
preen. Oh well…the river is still here along with the roar of the falls
over the dam.

Another view of the river from the bridge looking to the southwest. Both photos were taken on September 14, 2009.
School House #2
A large one room school house plus clockrooms in the front. A separate door for the boys and girls and I would suppose each sat on their own side of the room. It was built in 1875 and is quite different than the typical one room school built in the 1890's in this area. This is a late morning shot taken on May 4, 2010.
Another View of the School House
Looking southeast at the school. As you can see a solid back wall where the pot belly stove sat.
A Long Old Barn
Here is a view of the old barn that sits behind the school house shown above.
Two Barns
A couple of nice looking barns in southeast Shelby county. This photo was taken on September 2, 2009.
